In daily skincare routines, operations related to the lashes must be handled with extreme caution. When applying toner with a cotton pad, be extra careful with the patting motion near the lashes. The fine fibers on the cotton pad are like hidden little traps—if you’re not careful, they might catch the lashes, causing the eyelashes to be yanked out forcefully. This not only ruins the beautiful lash look but also may damage your natural lashes. Therefore, when applying skincare products like toner around the eyes, it’s better to use your fingers. Fingers have a more flexible and gentle touch, allowing better control of pressure and position, thus avoiding unnecessary damage to the lashes.
If you’re using oil-containing lotions, creams, or other skincare products, you need to be even more cautious. The skin around the eyes is sensitive, and many people choose specialized eye care products. But if these products accidentally get on the lashes, it’s a big problem. Because oil is the “arch-nemesis” of lash adhesive—it can slowly penetrate the adhesive layer, weakening its stickiness, like injecting a “separating agent” into a strong adhesive bond, causing the lash extensions to fall off prematurely. Once you notice oil-containing skincare products on the lashes, quickly wipe them off with a wet cotton pad or swab, using gentle movements. Wipe from the root of the lashes in the direction of their growth to minimize pulling.
When Applying Makeup: Reduce “Pressure” on Lashes
During makeup application, there are many details to note to avoid adding extra burden to lash extensions. The choice of eyeliner is particularly crucial. If you use a hard pencil or gel eyeliner, the frequent friction between the tip or the product and the lash roots is like applying “pressure” to the roots, making the lashes unstable and prone to falling off. A soft liquid eyeliner or eyeliner pen, on the other hand, has a light and smooth texture, causing less friction on the lash roots, thus better protecting the lashes and making eyeliner application easy without affecting lash stability.
If eyeshadow powder accidentally falls onto the lashes or foundation gets on them, don’t ignore it. Use a wet cotton swab to gently wipe away the dirt. If the dirt is obvious and a regular wet swab can’t clean it, dip a swab in an appropriate amount of cleaning solution and wipe gently, still moving from the root to the tip of the lashes to prevent them from being pulled out. The cleaning solution mentioned here is best a professional lash cleanser, which is less irritating to the lashes and adhesive, effectively cleaning dirt without harming the lashes.
In addition, try not to use mascara. Most mascara removers contain oily ingredients, and during removal, these oils can slowly seep into the lash adhesive, causing it to lose its stickiness and leading to the loss of extensions. If you really want fuller-looking lashes, you can choose mascara specifically designed for lash extensions. This type of mascara has a relatively light texture, causing less damage to the lashes, but it shouldn’t be used too frequently.
Also, never use a regular lash curler on lash extensions. Lash curlers require a certain amount of pressure when clamping, which is a significant burden on fragile extensions and natural lashes, easily causing the extensions to fall off and even potentially damaging the natural lashes, affecting their healthy growth. If you feel your natural lashes aren’t curly enough, consider using a heated lash curler. It uses heat to curl the lashes and, compared to regular curlers, causes less damage. However, pay attention to the temperature and operation method to avoid burning the skin around the eyes.
